10 Keys Project
Criminal justice practitioners around the world seek practical measures to address the serious crises that exist in many justice systems. The purpose of the 10 Keys Project is to offer practical ideas to assist them in doing that.
- Improving Conditions in Overcrowded Prisons
- Prison overcrowding is a major contributor to problems including:1) reduced staff morale; 2)security and control difficulties; 3) staff and inmate health & wellbeing problems; 4) increased levels of conflict and violence; and 5) Failure of rehabilitation resulting in increased re-offending. While building or expanding prison capacity can reduce overcrowding there are things that can be done to improve conditions in overcrowded prisons.
- Preparing Prisoners for Re-Entry
- Nearly all prisoners are eventually released back into society. Whether they re-enter society successfully—as a contributing member—or unsuccessfully is a matter of public safety. Unfortunately, most ex-prisoners are unable to make a successful transition and they eventually return to prison.
- Making Sentencing More Restorative
- Restorative justice is increasingly influential around the world. The UN recommends that countries use it more and has endorsed basic principles to ensure that it is effectively blended with criminal justice.
