RJ Week 2003 in Trinidad and Tobago

PF Trinidad and Tobago set up a restorative justice committee, which chose to follow the suggestions for observances produced by Correctional Services Canada. In this, the ministry scheduled several public events including prayer rallies, community consultation meetings, media interviews, church based panel discussion on crime, and events within the prison. The Philemon study was distributed to Churches to use with their congregations .

In this observance, PF Trinidad and Tobago held two events involving prisoners. One was a prisoner art show and the other was a family day in the prison. Issues of amends and reconciliation were addressed when Nijill Francois, an inmate at the maximum-security prison, presented a painting to the rape crisis society and to someone involved in the former community mediation centres.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
