Justice Reform by Focus Area

PF national organisations work to improve the justice system in all areas including prison reform, restorative justice, alternatives to incarceration, etc.

Advocating for Reform
Justice reform does not happen in a vacuum and many partners are needed in the work. For this reason, PF national organisations sponsor justice reform seminars and training sessions on a variety of topics including restorative justice, human rights and best practices in prison. They also respond to government proposals on specific justice issues and sit on government investigative bodies working to understand problems and find solutions.
Aftercare
Throughout the world, PF national organisations have discovered the importance of assisting prisoners in preparing for release from prison and in the struggle for reintegration once they are released. These articles highlight some of the working being done.
Communities of Restoration
Communities of Restoration (COR) are 24-hour, 7-day-a-week intensive prison regimes operated by Prison Fellowship NGOs. They are designed to reduce offending behaviour through character-focused, faith-based programming.
Legal Assistance
In many countries, Prison Fellowship is coming to the aid of poor prisoners by providing legal assistance to those who cannot afford to pay for the services of a lawyer.
Prison Overcrowding
PF national organisations around the world addresses prison overcrowding in a variety of ways including legal assistance, lobbying the government for reform, and working on government committees. These stories highlight some of this work.
Restorative Justice Initiatives
PF national organisations work with restorative justice in a variety of ways. This includes promoting restorative justice among different constituencies, advocating for legislation, and developing restorative justice programmes.
Sycamore Tree Project®
A faith-based programme that brings victims into prisons to meet with "unrelated" offenders. The groups discuss together issues related to crime and its consequences.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
