“Mirjam” Faith-based Unit

PF Latvia’s Mirjam faith-based unit assists women prisoners through relationship building, developing artistic talents and building self-confidence.

Opened in 2003, the programme serves female prisoners with one to two years left in their sentences. Housed in a separate unit within the prison, the Mirjam daily schedule was developed by the programme schedule and approved by the prison administration. Participants are employed in different parts of the prison during the day and participate in classes in the chapel in the evening. Mirjam offers a wide range of classes including:

  • New Testament
  • Old Testament
  • Classical Music
  • Music
  • Art History
  • Fine arts
  • Theatre


The Mirjam faith-based unit programme year runs from 1 September through 31 May.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
