Assisting Foreign Prisoners in Chile

Last modified 2007-05-25 22:47

For several years, PF Chile staff and volunteers noticed the difficulties faced by foreign prisoners in Chilean prisons. Most were in prison for drug trafficking and faced many difficulties in obtaining the necessary legal assistance. In 1998, PF Chile began providing this assistance through it legal department.

Currently, the national ministry works with foreign prisoners to provide legal assistance and connect them to their embassies and consulates. The national ministry has worked with prisoners from several countries Latin America, Europe, Africa and North America.

Through its efforts, the legal department of PF Chile has helped more than 50 foreign prisoners to obtain freedom either conditionally though bail or permanently. For released prisoners without any resources, the national ministry offers shelter through a halfway house and assistance with finding work until the ex-prisoners are able to leave Chile.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
