Ensuring Due Process for Prisoners in Liberia
Last modified 2007-01-26 11:42
Prison Fellowship Liberia is participating in a Case Flow Committee created by the national government to review the cases of prisoners being held without trial. Each week, the committee – consisting of representatives from the United Nations Mission in Liberia, the Ministry of Justice and PF Liberia – reviews cases to identify prisoners who have not been formally charged in court.
Created in April 2005, the Case Flow Committee is the result of meetings held between PF Liberia, the UN Mission and the Ministry of Justice on the reality of individuals being held in prison for as much as two years without being charged in court. Since its establishment, the committee has facilitated the release of over 1000 prisoners being held without benefit of trial.
