APAC Receives Visit and Support from Government Officials
Last modified 2006-01-30 11:19
In late 2005, several representatives of state and local government traveled to the city of Itaúna with the expressed purpose of visiting APAC. This group included the Secretary for Social Defense of the State of Minas Gerais, the Coordinator of a State-wide prison reform project, a representative of the military police and judges. They toured the entire facility including the work areas, offices, classrooms and the three regimes – open, semi-open, and closed.
The growth of APAC in the state of Minas Gerais can be seen in the creation of the state-wide prison reform project --Novos Rumos na Execução Penal – by the Minas Gerais Tribunal of Justice. This project seeks to promote the implementation of the APAC methodology throughout rest of the country. According to the project website, the work in Itaúna has become a model for the states of Maranhão and Espírito Santo. In December, this project was awarded honorable mention in the II Prêmio Innovare: o Judiciário no Século XXI. The purpose of the prize is to identify, systematize, and distribute pioneering and successful practices in the area of justice.
