Promoting Restorative Justice in Pakistan

Last modified 2007-12-05 06:36

Recently, PF Pakistan sponsored an introductory seminar on prison ministry and restorative justice for 40 individuals from the NGO Caritas Pakistan. The seminar was a part of a larger PF Pakistan strategy to promote restorative justice in the country.

The invitation came as a result of a book by Arthur Wilson, PFP executive director, about the restoration of offenders and victims and the Pakistani prison system, including a short introduction to restorative justice and the United Nations Basic Principles on Restorative Justice. The book has been widely distributed throughout the country sparking interest and inquiries from media outlets as well as from other NGOs such as Caritas Pakistan. The national ministry is currently providing information on restorative justice to those responsible for training national prison personnel in the hope that it will be invited to offer training workshops for prison personnel.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
