Raising Community Awareness about Restorative Justice

Recently, Uvenama Rova of PF Papua New Guinea gave a presentation on restorative justice to a Women’s Fellowship Workshop of the United Church of Papua New Guinea.

The presentation included an introduction to restorative justice, videos about restorative programmes, and an opportunity for the participants to share about their experiences with reconciliation. The workshop trained women leaders from several different churches in different topics with the intent that these women would return to their congregations and share their new knowledge.

The presentation to the Women’s Fellowship Workshop is one of a series of activities to raise awareness about restorative justice in Papua New Guinea. Uve has spoken to other church groups as well as government and village groups. Currently, he is conducting a Bible study on restorative justice for a village fellowship.

Communities of Restoration

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
