PF Zambia Representatives Receive Restorative Justice Training

Last modified 2006-08-01 13:01

In May, Samuel Kawilila and Richard Mbindawina of PF Zambia travelled to the USA to study restorative justice at the Eastern Mennonite University Summer Peacebuilding Institute in Harrisonburg, VA

Their goal was to develop skills in facilitating meetings between victims and offenders. Along with their training at Eastern Mennonite University, Samuel and Richard visited various restorative justice programmes in Virginia and Indiana and concluded with a two-day visit with the Centre at the Washington DC office of the Secretariat. With the knowledge gained through this trip, they are developing a curriculum for training volunteer mediators in Zambia.

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
