UN Ancillary Meetings on Restorative Justice

Among the traditional features of UN Crime Congresses are the ancillary meetings that run simultaneously with the Congress.  These meetings are convened by NGOs, UN Institutes and governments, and address topics expected to be considered by the Congress.

At the April 2000 Congress, a Working Party on Restorative Justice that had been established by the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (NY) presented a series of ancillary meetings addressing different topics related to restorative justice.  Together they formed a kind of mini-conference on restorative justice, and were supplemented by other ancillary meetings sponsored by other NGOs on aspects of restorative justice practice.

Sessions:

  1. Overview
  2. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions
  3. Standards
  4. Evaluation
  5. Processes
  6. Outcomes

The Report of Ancillary Meeting Coordination - which includes full summaries of each session - may be downloaded as a Word document by clicking here.

Communities of Restoration

What is restorative justice?

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused or revealed by criminal behaviour. It is best accomplished through cooperative processes that include all stakeholders.

Practices and programs reflecting restorative purposes will respond to crime by: (a) identifying and taking steps to repair harm, (b) involving all  stakeholders, and (c) transforming the traditional relationship between communities and their governments in responding to crime. more
